Proteomics is the study of all proteins in a biological system and is being used increasingly by clinical researchers to identify biomarkers of disease.These biomarkers are applied to several areas of patient care including disease prediction, diagnosis, staging, monitoring, and the assessment of drug efficacy.
Three major phases are required for a proteomics biomarker to be translated into a clinical assay:
Discovery to identify candidate biomarkers
Validation of candidates in a large-scale clinical study
Implementation in a clinical laboratory
