Advanced genetic blueprint could unlock precision medicine

3 March , 2025

A groundbreaking study published in Nature Medicine presents the Arab Pangenome Reference (APR) — the first comprehensive genetic reference capturing the diversity of over 2.5 billion people across the Middle East and South Asia. Unlike traditional linear reference genomes that use a single standard DNA sequence, the APR compiles multiple genomic variations specific to Arab populations, enabling a more accurate and inclusive representation of human genetic diversity.

This collaborative effort, led by Dubai Health’s Center for Applied and Translational Genomics (CATG) and Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, in partnership with the University of Birmingham Dubai, marks a significant advancement in precision medicine. By uncovering millions of novel genetic sequences, the APR enhances understanding of rare and region-specific disease-causing variants, facilitating early diagnosis and personalized treatment.

The project sets the foundation for graph pangenomes across the broader Middle East and South Asia, aiming to integrate diverse genetic landscapes into global databases—paving the way for equitable healthcare innovations worldwide.
